The 5 Questions to Ask Before Buying Anything New

The most expensive part of most wardrobes is not the clothes that get worn often, it is the clothes that get worn once, or never. Before you buy anything new, ask yourself these five questions. They take less than a minute and they have saved my clients thousands over the years.

1. Does it actually fit my body shape?

Not in a vague, generally-fits sense, but specifically: does this silhouette flatter your particular proportions? A boxy jacket on a defined waist, or a clingy dress on a body that wants structure, will always feel slightly wrong no matter how nice the fabric is. If you do not yet know your shape, that question alone is worth answering before you shop at all.

2. Is it within my colour season?

Even a beautifully cut garment in the wrong tone can make you look tired the moment it sits near your face. If a colour does not belong in your palette, it is far easier to enjoy it as a bag, a shoe, or an accessory further from your skin, rather than a top or dress.

3. Can I wear it with at least three things I already own?

This single question eliminates more impulse buys than any other. If a piece only works with one imaginary outfit you have not bought yet, you are not building a wardrobe, you are buying a costume. Pieces that integrate easily into your existing rotation get worn. Pieces that need a whole new supporting cast get forgotten.

4. Am I buying for my actual life, or for an aspirational version of it?

Be honest about how you really spend your week. Buying for a lifestyle you do not currently have, whether that is more formal events, more gym sessions, or more travel than you actually do, is one of the most common and avoidable wardrobe traps. Buy for the Tuesday you will actually live, not the Tuesday you wish you had.

5. Am I buying this because I love it, or because it is discounted?

A discount is irrelevant if the item never leaves the wardrobe. A genuinely well-loved piece worn a hundred times might cost a few rands per wear. A heavily discounted item worn once costs you the full price, just disguised as a bargain. The real question is never the price tag, it is the number of times you will actually reach for it.

Putting it into practice

None of these questions require willpower or deprivation, they simply slow the moment between seeing something and buying it long enough for a more honest answer to surface. Most women already know, somewhere, when something will not get worn. These five questions just make that instinct conscious before the money leaves your account rather than after.

If your wardrobe currently feels full but somehow has nothing to wear, a Virtual Consultation is built exactly for this. On a discovery call we go through what you already own together, and I then write you a report with shopping links based on real, identified gaps rather than guesswork.
